The answer everyone quotes is 26. The answer that wins you floor spots is: it depends on orientation, and the math is two lines long.

The 53-footer, measured honestly

A 53' dry van's interior is roughly 630 in long × 98.5 in wide × 110 in high at the narrowest usable points (wheel wells, door frame and E-track eat a little). A GMA pallet is 48 × 40 in. Two ways to lay it down:

PatternAcrossDeepFloor spots
Straight (48" forward)2 × 40" = 80" ✓630 ÷ 48 = 1326
Turned (40" forward)2 × 48" = 96" ✓630 ÷ 40 = 1530
Pinwheeled (mixed)pairs alternate27–28 typical

Turned loading fits four more pallets — the catch is forklift access (40-inch openings must face the right way) and slightly slower loading. Pinwheeling trades a couple of spots back for stability on mixed freight.

Double-stacking: 52 and up

If cartons are crush-rated and pallet heights cooperate (~two 45–52 in stacks under a 110 in ceiling), 26 floor spots become 52 pallet positions, and turned loads reach 60. The constraint that actually binds first is usually weight: at 80,000 lb legal gross, usable payload is ~44,000–45,000 lb — 26 pallets of 1,700 lb each maxes the scale with the trailer half-empty by volume. Dense freight cubes out the scale; light freight cubes out the walls. (That trade-off is exactly what freight class prices in LTL.)

Other equipment, same arithmetic

  • 48' trailer (~570 in): 24 straight · 28 turned · 48 double-stacked.
  • 26' box truck (~302 × 96 in): 12 straight; payload ~8,000–12,000 lb.
  • Euro pallets (1200 × 800 mm) in a 53': three across is possible at 94.5 in — 3 × 13 = 39 floor spots straight.

Booking the space: full truck or LTL?

Under ~6 pallets, LTL almost always wins; over ~14–16, full truckload usually does; between, price both. If you're shipping LTL, remember carriers rate on pooled density and class, not floor spots — measure the real stack heights, run the class calculation, and put those numbers on the BOL so the terminal's dimensioner agrees with your paperwork.

Quick answers

How many pallets fit in a 53-foot trailer?
26 standard 48×40 pallets on the floor (two across, thirteen deep), up to 30 if all pallets are turned 40-inch-side forward, and 52 when freight allows double-stacking.
How many pallets fit in a 48-foot trailer?
24 standard 48×40 pallets straight-loaded (2 × 12), up to 28 turned, 48 double-stacked.
How much weight can a 53-foot trailer carry?
Legal gross vehicle weight is 80,000 lb in the US; after tractor and trailer tare, usable payload is typically 43,000–45,000 lb — about 1,650 lb average per floor spot at 26 pallets.
How many pallets fit in a 26-foot box truck?
Usually 12 standard 48×40 pallets (two across, six deep) single-stacked, payload around 10,000 lb depending on the truck.
