The convention

Volumetric weight (kg) = L × W × H in cm ÷ 6,000  ·  imperial equivalent: in³ ÷ 166 = lb
Chargeable weight = max(actual, volumetric)

6,000 cm³/kg assumes freight at 166.7 kg/m³ (10.4 lb/ft³). Express integrators sometimes apply the stricter 5,000 cm³/kg (200 kg/m³) — a quote's divisor is worth checking before you compare providers.

Cutting chargeable weight

Every centimeter compounds: shaving 5 cm off a 120 cm carton height cuts volumetric weight ~4%. Vacuum-pack soft goods, ship knocked-down instead of assembled, and consolidate cartons into fewer, fuller boxes. When volumetric weight still dominates after packing discipline, price ocean or LTL against air — modes that charge by density band (freight class) often flip the economics for light bulky freight.

Quick answers

How is air freight chargeable weight calculated?
Compute volumetric weight — total cubic centimeters ÷ 6,000 gives kilograms (or cubic inches ÷ 166 gives pounds) — then compare with actual weight. The carrier charges the greater of the two.
Why 6,000 cm³ per kg?
It encodes an assumed density of 166.7 kg/m³: aircraft run out of volume before payload, so freight lighter than that assumption pays by the space it occupies. Some express products use 5,000 cm³/kg, which assumes 200 kg/m³.
Is chargeable weight the same as dimensional weight?
Same concept, different dialects: parcel carriers say 'dimensional weight' (divisor 139 domestically), air cargo says 'volumetric' or 'chargeable' weight (6,000 cm³/kg). Both mean max(actual, volume-derived) weight.
What's the chargeable weight of one standard pallet?
A 120 × 100 × 120 cm pallet is 1.44 m³ → 240 kg volumetric. At 180 kg actual you're charged for 240 kg; at 300 kg actual you're charged for 300 kg.
